“Hinweise zur Aufführungspraxis  • Suggestions for Performance”

Discusses the execution of dotted rhythms against a triplet background, the differentiation between dot and wedge or stroke (Keil), and the execution of ornaments. Suggests cadenzas and fermata embellishments.

The same ornament may be notated in different ways, and the same symbol may signify different ornaments. Grace-notes are played long or short, depending on the context. The Doppelschlag appears in three forms: on a non-upbeat note, on a short upbeat, and before a dot. It may be notated by means of three or four grace-notes, a tr sign, a tr sign with a turn, two 32nds preceded by a grace note, the mordent sign, or the Doppelschlag symbol (~). The tr sign may signify a grace-note, an inverted mordent, a trill without turn, a trill with turn, or a Doppelschlag.
